WThe Edge of Night ABC Affiliate Station History In December 1975, Edge moved from the CBS television network to ABC-TV. Initially the move was viewed as a good one because ABC offered the series a later time slot that had traditionally made available a larger viewing audience, including men home from early work shifts and school children. Although third in terms of ratings, ABC also had a younger demographic than CBS or NBC which translated to higher advertising rates and a potentially more profitable series. However, several circumstances worked against Edge's success at ABC. When the deal to switch networks was completed, most affiliates had already finalized their schedules for the 1975-76 season. This resulted in some affiliates declining to carry the series at all. Many affiliates that did clear the show aired it out of the network pattern, typically in an early-to-late morning time slot. One reason for time-shifting was that afternoon time slots were extremely profitable to affiliates who could purchase an off-network sitcom or syndicated program, strip it across five days, and sell all of the commercial breaks to local advertisers. Airing Edge out of pattern, especially in morning time-slots, severely limited its ratings by removing most men and kids from the audience.
What follows is a general history of how local affiliates scheduled Edge. It's a work in progress not an exhaustive account. Information for approximately 40 some odd affiliates is missing, and precise information on the ones documented is incomplete. I've made every effort to verify exact dates and station information where possible. Most of the information was provided by researching television schedules printed in local newspapers and TV Guide and receiving emails from visitors who were kind enough to share knowledge of their local stations. Television markets are listed first, followed by the call letters and channel number of the station carrying Edge at that time (throughout the years some stations have changed their call letters and network affiliation).
The original ABC pattern for The Edge of Night was 4pm Eastern, 3pm Central, and 12pm Pacific time. Most affiliates in the Mountain time zone cleared the series at 1 or 2pm. In July 1976, when ABC expanded One Life to Live and General Hospital to a 45 minute format, most affiliates in the Pacific time zone began to observe the Central time zone network pattern and moved Edge to 3pm.

CBS AFFILIATES NOT CLEARING (or ATYPICAL CLEARANCE) 1956-75: Even in the highly rated CBS years, Edge was not carried by all of the network's affiliates. The following is a non exhaustive list of affiliate stations that declined to carry The Edge of Night or carried it out of the network pattern.
Bellingham, WA: KVOS-TV (12) Did not carry Edge when it debuted in 1956.
Binghamton, NY: WNBF-TV (12) This affiliate had dual ABC/CBS affiliation and carried Edge at 9:30 am on a one day delay in the 1950s.
Boston, MA: WNAC-TV (7). Was not carrying Edge as late as 1960.
Cincinnati, OH: WKRC (12). Regardless of its network, Edge was always treated shabbily in Cincinnati. Ironic because the series' packager Procter & Gamble was headquartered there, and Edge's fictional local of Monticello was based on Cincy. Edge was not carried in Cincinnati as late as 1958, but by 1960 it was being shown at 10 a.m.
Greensboro, NC: WFMY-TV (2). Edge was shown at 9am on a one-day delay in 1957.
Hartford, CT: WTIC-TV (3). Edge not carried as early as 1966 and late as February 1973 in Hartford, but it was shown there for its final year and a half on CBS.
Honolulu, HI: KGMB-TV (9). In 1969, Edge was carried at 12 noon, sandwiched between Search for Tomorrow and As the World Turns.
Louisville, KY: WHAS-TV (11) Edge was carried on a one-day delay at 9:30 am in 1968.
Pittsburgh, PA: KDKA-TV (2) Edge was not carried in Pittsburgh as late as 1960.
Reno, NV: KOLO-TV (8) KOLO didn’t carry any CBS soaps in the 1950s despite being a primary CBS affiliate with secondary NBC/ABC affiliation.
Salinas/Monterey, CA: KSBW-TV (8) Was not carrying Edge in 1961.
St. Joseph, MO: KFEQ-TV (2) Did not carry Edge from the beginning but began clearing it beginning May 31, 1965.
Tacoma, WA: KTNT-TV (11) Carried Edge at 1:30pm in 1957, which was the live feed from New York.
Topeka, KS: WIBW-TV (13) Did not clear Edge from the beginning of its run but was clearing it by March 1964.
Wilmington, NC: WECT-TV (6) This was an unusual situation in that WECT was an NBC affiliate that carried Edge at 3:30pm sandwiched between sister P&G soaps Another World and Somerset in 1971.
Youngstown, OH: WKBN-TV (27) Did not carry Edge from 1956- 1961 (at least).
