Episode 3 of 8
Summary By: Mark Faulkner
ACT ONE
Mike phones the hospital for an update on Dick. Sara tells him that Dick’s eyesight is still poor, but he’s with the ophthalmologist now. Mike says that he’s at police headquarters waiting to see Bill Marceau about not letting the police go after Mickey Kutka. Mrs. Appleman, Richard’s mother, arrives. All she knows is that Dick was struck with a blackjack during a robbery attempt, and he has a concussion. Sara attempts to soften Mrs. Appleman’s fears by telling her that Dick’s right side is only numb, not paralyzed, and that his vision problems are common following shock to the nervous system. Mrs. Appleman insists that Sara tell her everything. Sara admits that the doctors fear a brain hemorrhage, but they can’t be sure. Mrs. Appleman goes to Mary.

ACT TWO
Scene 2A
Bill returns to his office and sarcastically asks if the great Mike Karr wants a favor from the bumbling police. Mike realizes that Bill is still sore because Mike was correct in his assertion that Hugh Campbell did not murder his sister. However, Bill is correct about one thing. Mike does need a favor from the cops. He explains the situation with Richard Appleman. Bill coolly suggests Mike go down a few doors to Captain Blake’s office. Blake’s in charge of robberies. Homicide is Bill’s department. Mike wants to know what will happen if Dick dies. Bill says that he’ll take the case if that’s the outcome. Until then, Mike has to deal with Blake. Mike reminds Bill that he too was once a cop, and he knows that Bill can cut across departmental rules if he wants to. Mike implores him not to let Mike’s winning a case come between their friendship. Bill admits that his ego was heavily bruised in the Campbell case, but what is it Mike wants now? Mike explains the Kutka situation. He wants Bill to convince Blake not to issue a pickup order for at least 24 hours, because if Kutka discovers he’s a wanted man, he’ll probably skip town. In the meantime, Mike plans to find Kutka himself, hoping that Kutka will lead him to the person behind the scheme to steal the Appleman motor data. Bill wonders why he lets Mike talk him into these things, but agrees to do it, though Blake is a stickler for procedure and might not agree. Mike instructs Bill to pull rank on Blake. After all, Bill may be Monticello’s next chief of police.
Scene 2B
Mama Appleman tells Mary and Sara that hoping is good, but praying for Dick is better. Mary says she has prayed and put on her bravest face for Dick even though she’s terrified. Dr. Atwater stops to say there’ll be news soon. Mary introduces him to Dick’s mother. Mama Appleman insists Mary visit Dick alone. She thanks Sara from her heart for being so good to Mary, like a sister.
Scene 2C
Dick calls out for Mary. He looks around the room, and his remaining vision begins to fade. He realizes that everything is now completely dark. He’s totally blind.

ACT THREE
Scene 3A
Mary arrives at Dick’s room. He wants to know if the doctors said anything to her about his condition. She replies that they said he was doing as well as could be expected. Dick tells Mary that he wants to see the doctor alone, as he has some questions to ask. After Mary leaves, Dick confides to the doctor that he’s blind. Dr. Atwater says that it’s only temporary. Dick wails that he might as well be dead. The doctor explains that Dick has a brain hemorrhage that’s pressing on the optic nerve, causing the vision problems. Surgery will be necessary to relieve the pressure and restore his sight. Dick doesn’t want Mary told, but Dr. Atwater reveals that Mary already knows. He advises Dick not to try and fool the woman who loves him.
