Joe works while Malcolm pitches his idea. The phone rings. It's Phil Capice, who tells Joe that he needs to see him and will be right over. Joe excuses himself, instructing Malcolm to pitch his idea to Jake. Malcolm leaves the office and goes out to Cookie's cubicle, where Cookie is busy wrapping a Christmas present for Laurie Ann.
Malcolm notes that Joe got a call and speculates that it was from Phil Capice regarding some business for Mike Karr. Cookie says that Malcolm is always thinking about a story. Just then, Phil walks by. As Phil enters Joe's office, Malcolm watches and remarks that he'd like to know what's going on in there.

Malcolm continues to watch Joe's office while Cookie puts on her coat. Cookie says that she's going by the Karr's to drop off Laurie Ann's present. When Malcolm offers to drop her off, Cookie reminds him that her family gets upset when they see the two together. "But," she adds, "they'll have to get used to it... won't they?" Malcolm tells her to go ahead and deliver the present; he's got to follow up on the Eve Morris story. Malcolm notes that she's a very interesting lady. "What do you think her angle is?" he wonders. Cookie points out that Eve's husband left her with a great deal of money... to use any way she sees fit. "Not any way. The money has to be used for cultural or educational purposes, " Malcolm reminds her. Eve puzzles him. She is really serious about the theatre project, but he wonders what's in it for her. Cookie suggests that Malcolm simply ask Eve. Malcolm promises Cookie that they'll get together later for coffee and Danish, then he checks his address book and leaves.

ACT FOUR
Scene 1
Joe Pollock's office
Joe looks at a rather gruesome picture of the Dave Hansen murder scene. "And you want us to run this picture of the Hansen death scene in the paper, Phil? But why? What excuse can I use?" Joe asks. Phil says that maybe Joe can think of something. Joe reminds him that the picture is "not hot-off-the-griddle stuff. The photo was presented by the prosecution on the first or second day of the trial. And the Herald ran the picture then." Furthermore, Joe insists that the paper doesn't make a habit of printing such gory photos. "A 22 year-old girl going to prison for life or possibly getting the chair isn't very pleasant either..., " Phil retorts.
Joe realizes that Phil's request is connected to Gerry McGrath's defense, but Phil can't give him the details. Phil continues by saying that even he doesn't know the significance of the request, but Mike wants to make sure someone sees the photo and hopes it will lead him to Dave Hansen's killer. Joe agrees to run the photo as part of a series that Malcolm proposed earlier. The two wish one another Merry Christmas and part. Joe telephones Malcolm, who is still with Eve, and leaves a message.
Scene 2
Eve's office
Talking to Malcolm, Eve explains that "the bulk of Mr. Morris' estate is in trust with me as the trustee, along with Norman, of course...my lawyer." Eve says that Norman can't make a decision, so she must run the show, and her inheritance must be spent on something cultural or educational, as long as she and Norman agree on the project and it benefits Monticello.
Since she is not a cultural entity, Eve remarks, she must live rather modestly. Malcolm points out that at least she still has the theatre project. Eve says that she is determined to make it work, and "I usually get what I go after," she comments as she eyes Malcolm.

ACT FIVE
Scene 1
Eve's office
Malcolm invites Eve out for a bite to eat, but she declines the invitation, saying that perhaps they can do it another time. As Malcolm leaves, he reminds Eve of her statement that they might make a good team. He asks what she wants from the theatre project. She replies that she wants it to succeed. She wants a fine, quality, year-round theatre company in Monticello. Malcolm cautions that city theatre projects seldom make any money. Eve says that Malcolm intrigues her, and they should sit down and talk about it sometime. As Macolm exits, Eve comments to herself, "Intriguing man... intriguing man!"
Scene 2
Cookie's cubicle at the paper
Cookie returns, but Malcolm isn't there. She goes to his desk and looks on it. Joe comes out of his office and tells Cookie that if she sees Malcolm, tell him that he and Joe need to talk in the morning. Malcolm returns after Joe leaves, but has forgotten his date with Cookie. She suggests they get the Danish and go to his place, where she'll make coffee and help him decorate a small Christmas tree that she bought him. They kiss and leave.
