DR. CLAY JORDAN
FIRST APPEARANCE: January 1976
LAST APPEARANCE: February 1977
PERFORMER: Niles McMaster
EXIT: Arrested after abducting Nicole Drake.
OCCUPATION: Criminal who posed as a physician and "treated" amnesiac Nicole Drake in Paris and catatonic Geraldine Whitney in Monticello. Clay was actually working to find the location of fugitive criminal Claude Revenant.
VILLAINOUS ACTS: Murdered Dr. Quentin Henderson, Van Rydell, and Phoebe Jamison. Plotted to murder Adam Drake and kidnapped Adam's wife Nicole.
Following the missing 45 days that Nicole Drake spent lost after the explosion of The Sprite, she was rescued in Guadeloupe and then taken to Paris, where she was cared for by Dr. Clay Jordan, an American physician who helped her emerge from a coma and attempted to recover her memory. In January 1976, Nicole, having regained her memory and returned to Monticello, contacted Clay about helping with the case of Geraldine Whitney, herself comatose and paralyzed. Clay agreed and flew to Monticello. His unorthodox treatments bothered Dr. Lacey, the Whitney family's physician. Soon, Adam Drake was suspicious of Clay's curiosity about Nicole's sudden flashes of memory from the days she was missing at sea. Adam did a background check on Clay and discovered that he did not have a medical degree, but managed to avoid prosecution by acting as a "consultant" on cases rather than providing medical care. The news devastated Geraldine, who was certain that Clay's treatments had been partially responsible for her remarkable recovery.
When a series of mysterious attempts on the life of Nicole Drake occurred over the summer of 1976, Adam speculated they were somehow related to the missing 45 days from Nicole's memory. She underwent narcosynthesis (drug therapy) to unlock the past she could not remember. Clay attempted to barge in on the session with Dr. Quentin Henderson, but Adam threw him out. Later, Clay returned to the office and broke in, hoping he could steal Dr. Henderson's notes from the session. Quentin arrived unexpectedly and caught him, leaving Clay with no alternative but to kill him.
Weeks later he committed a second murder. Van Rydell, another assassin, made an attempt on Nicole's life but was subdued. Clay happened to be present, and finding himself alone with Rydell, shot him cold blood, later lying to the police that Rydell tried to escape so Clay killed him in self-defense. Soon, Phoebe noted Clay's obsession with learning what memories narcosynthesis had uncovered for Nicole, and she became even more suspicious when Kevin told her that Clay was not a licensed doctor. Realizing that Nicole's file was missing from Quentin's office after his murder, Phoebe speculated that Clay murdered Quentin to get the file, and the unidentified fingerprints found in the office probably belonged to Clay. In November 1976, Phoebe went to his apartment on the pretext of a visit and stole a wine glass to get his prints. But, Clay saw what she was doing and poisoned her with the drug he had intended to use to get Adam out of the way. He arranged Phoebe's death to look like a drunken car accident. When that failed, he decided to go on the run, but not before going to Anthony Saxon for help.
Clay's past now came to light. He and Claude Revenant, the man trying to kill Nicole, both worked for the mob. When Revenant stole 30 million dollars in mob money, including a sizeable portion of Tony Saxon's wealth, the mob vowed to find him. Clay had been hired to shadow Nicole, retrieve her memory, and provide the mob with the location to Revenant's secret Caribbean Island hideaway before Revenant's own hit-men could silence her. Clay went underground, but resurfaced in February 1977 to kidnap Nicole during her shift at The New Moon Cafe. He took her to a seedy rooming house, and despite her pregnancy, pumped her with her barbiturates to keep her subdued, and planned to inject her with sodium pentathol to unlock her memory. However, the police managed to trace them through the neighborhood pharmacy where Clay purchased his drugs. Before he could inject her, and risk killing her from the combination of drugs, the police found them and arrested Clay.
