Betty-Jean Battle and Jack Lane were Edge of Night's original young sweethearts. Their love was complicated from the outset by her parents' disapproval of Jack as well his family ties to nefarious uncle Harry Lane.. When she was forbidden by them to continue seeing Jack, Betty-Jean impulsively eloped with him and consummated the marriage before it could be annulled. Their early married life was difficult due primarily to Jack's immaturity. Holding down a steady, reliable job was difficult for him, as he always looked for get-rich-quick schemes and wanted the nicer things in life. Betty Jean's unexpected pregnancy initially threatened her marriage, but Jack soon warmed to the idea. Following the birth of their son Bud, Jack took a job working for his step-father Winston Grimsley in order to build a better life for his family. However, Jack's ambition to get ahead frightened Betty-Jean. She discovered that he had been goaded into passing off a colleague's work as his own. When he refused to admit his guilt, Betty-Jean left him for a trial separation. Jack's duplicitous secretary Ruth Hakim decided to make the separation permanent by luring Jack into extramarital affair and arranging for Betty-Jean to spot them in a public embrace. The plan worked, but Ruth was strangled to death, leading to Jack's arrest and trial for the crime. The ordeal brought Jack and Betty-Jean back to one another. They reconciled and ultimately left Monticello for Texas when Jack received a lucrative job offer.
