Ashley Reynolds followed Phoebe Smith to Monticello when she returned to see her adoptive parents Bill and Martha Marceau. Martha was instantly suspicious of the smooth-talker and hired private detective Joel Gantry to get to the bottom of her ill feelings toward. Martha had good reason to be suspicious. Ashley had a secret wife, the wealthy Kay, whose wealth kept him in a comfortable lifestyle. When Ashley attempted to lure Phoebe away for a weekend tryst, she refused to go unless he came clean with Kay about their relationship. He said that he would, but then didn't. Meanwhile, Kay learned of the affair through Joel Gantry. She went to see Phoebe, warning her that although she was willing to divorce Ashley, she doubted that he would actually go through with it. When she confronted him, her speculation was correct. Wanting Kay's wealth and the security he received through his job working for Kay's father, Ashley would not consent to a divorce. He begged Kay not to divorce him, and when she hired attorney Jake Berman to instigate the proceedings, Ashley vowed to make their divorce a very messy, public affair. Stunned by Ashley's true colors, Phoebe decided to dump him, adding that she would testify on Kay's behalf. Ashley was equally stunned as Kay stopped all of his credit cards and charge accounts. Ashley was forced to take a room in a cheap motel. It was there that he provided an integral part of another Monticello story. Joel Gantry began bugging Ashley's phone and photographing his extracurricular activities. He enlisted the aide of Kevin Jamison to help gather incriminating evidence of Ashley's affairs at the motel. They were there the night Jake Berman, Kay's attorney, was murdered. Their presence established alibi for them, but one of Joel's photographs, taken that night in Ashley's room, captured the image of a clock, which was later used to prove that Joel murdered Gantry. Having lost both Phoebe and Kay, Ashley left Monticello in August 1973.
