RELATIVES: Dr. Kenneth Bryson (father, RIP). Beth Bryson (step-mother). Mike and Nancy Karr ("surrogate" parents).
RELATIONSHIPS: Lt. Jim Dedrickson. Kelly McGrath. Sky Whitney.
OCCUPATION: Photographer
The daughter of renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Kenneth Bryson, Valerie arrived to visit her father, unaware that he was holding Nancy Karr captive in his clinic. Valerie first met Emily Michaels, who was trying to expose April Scott, herself pretending to be a waitress named June in order to prove that Emily's unborn baby was fathered by Matt Sharkey. Emily showed Valerie a photo of Draper Scott, whom Valerie recognized as Richie, an orderly in her father's clinic. Draper took Valerie into his confidence, and ultimately, she helped him to expose Sharkey and her own father's criminal activities. After Dr. Bryson went to prison, Valerie moved to Monticello and was befriended by the Karrs, grateful for her role in helping to rescue a kidnapped Nancy.
The following month, Dr. Bryson died in prison. He left his daughter a fortune and a clue to the identity of a Vietnam war veteran she had fallen in love with three years earlier at her father's Swiss clinic. The veteran, Jim Dedrickson, was undergoing facial reconstruction, so Valerie never saw his face. In actuality, the man under the bandages was Jefferson Brown, a state department employee who had stolen the real Dedrickson's identity while awaiting plastic surgery to resemble Schuyler Whitney. Valerie's situation grew more complex when Nancy wrote a human interest story, and the real Jim Dedrickson came to Monticello, hoping to get his hands on the Bryson fortune by pretending to be the man with whom she had once been love.
Valerie had become involved with Nancy's nephew Kelly McGrath. At Kelly's urging, Nancy visited Beth Bryson in prison, and she spoiled Dedrickson's scheme by revealing that his face was not the one she saw following surgery. Dedrickson confessed all, and although Valerie forgave him, their relationship did not continue. Her relationship with Kelly also came to a conclusion when he decided to leave the country.
In the autumn of 1982, Valerie became close to the real Schuyler Whitney. They had met briefly in Switzerland before his identity was stolen by Jefferson Brown. However, Sky had an ulterior motive. He was accused of treason and in order to prove his innocence, he had to pretend an estrangement from Raven Alexander, the woman he really loved. When Valerie discovered the truth, she was devastated and left Monticello.
