The mother of baby Jennifer Sims, Taffy was a willing pawn in the local mob's efforts to get chief of police Bill Marceau in its pocket. Working with attorney Paul Fairchild, Taffy offered Martha Marceau the opportunity to adopt Jennifer for $7000, which she claimed she needed to start a new life away from Monticello.Once the deal was in place, Taffy returned, demanding an additional $1000 to replace Fairchild's attorney fees. Bill balked at the request, considering it extortion, but when Taffy snatched Jennifer and left the Marceau home, he changed his mind. With a promise that she would leave them alone, Bill gave Taffy a check in exchange for the baby. Later, Fairchild cautioned her that her scheme could have backfired, but it did have a positive outcome -it proved that Bill could be bought when placed under pressure. Fairchild and Taffy were both working for Morlock Sevingy, a representative of the mob.
Under Morlock's orders, Taffy decided not to leave Monticello. When Harry Johnson, the man Morlock paid to stab Adam Drake, was arrested, Taffy blackmailed Bill into approving Johnson's release by claiming that he was her boyfriend and would jeopardize the finalization of Jennifer's adoption. Throughout the summer, she continued to hold the threat of losing Jennifer over them, pushing Martha closer to a nervous breakdown, and compromising Bill's ethics by forcing him to release Floyd Porter, a suspect in the bombing of Adam Drake's honeymoon and yacht and the murder of Babs Micelli. However, once out, Porter eventually got into a fight with Babs' widower Danny Micelli. Porter beat Danny so badly that he had to be hospitalized. A furious Bill had Porter picked up and arrested, refusing to let him go again. When Fairchild visited the Marceaus, threatening blackmail again, rather than submit, Bill resigned from the police force.
In order to force Bill into withdrawing his resignation and subsequently release Porter, Morlock and Fairchild instructed Taffy to petition the court to have Jennifer removed from the Marceaus' custody. She took the child back, which sent Martha in a deep depression and nervous collapse. On October 14, Martha went to Taffy's apartment demanding to see a sick Jennifer. Taffy had locked the child in the bedroom, and as Martha begged to see her, Taffy cavalierly began to roll her hair in curlers. Spotting a gun that Taffy used for protection, Martha picked it up, ordering Taffy to unlock the bedroom door. Taffy rushed at Martha to force her out, and as she did, the gun accidentally discharged. Taffy fell to the floor. At that moment, Paul Fairchild arrived on the scene and convinced a stunned Martha to leave, offering to take care of the situation. But, the mob planned to use this as another way to blackmail Bill, who returned to the job with the threat of Taffy removed.
Visions of Taffy continued to haunt Martha. At the wedding of Johnny and Laurie, Martha imagined Taffy as the bride and fainted. Shortly thereafter, Morlock was brought in for questioning after Adam Drake nearly died from a poisoning. Fairchild again made his move, threatening to reveal Martha's role in Taffy's murder if Bill didn't have Morlock released. However, Martha could not stay quiet any longer, confessed to the crime, and was placed on trial for murder, defended by Adam. During the trial, Adam speculated that Taffy had been alive when Martha left her apartment, as police photos showed the body without curlers in her hair, and Martha distinctly recalled that Taffy had curlers when she was shot.
In March, Morlock was wounded in a struggle with Danny. Hospitalized, he saw a priest and feared that he was near death. With Adam, Bill, Luke, and Mike as witnesses, Morlock confessed that Taffy's gun had been loaded with blanks. The shooting had been a set-up to get another hold over Martha. After Martha fled the apartment, Fairchild phoned Morlock. He went to the apartment, removed the blank cartridge from the gun, replaced it with live ammunition, and gave Taffy what she "had coming" to her. She had threatened to expose their plans if they refused to give her a payoff, thus her death killed two birds with one stone.
