The possessive, controlling step-sister of Hugh Campbell, Mildred held the purse strings to the Bryer family fortune, which supported Hugh, as well as her con-man husband Max and his shady organization the Bryer Foundation. Mildred appeared to hold a secret over Hugh's head related to their late parents, dead in a mysterious fire. Mildred also opposed Hugh's impending marriage to Gail Armstrong. To stop the union, she threatened to withhold Hugh's inheritance, which she was executor, controlled. She and Hugh became embroiled in a bitter court case over their finances. Meanwhile, she made noises about closing down her husband's foundation, which she had funded.
In May 1959, Max secretly placed Mildred's asthma medicine, mixed by Hugh, with the industrial poison Hugh had developed for Winston Grimsley's laboratories. Mildred died, leading to Hugh's trial for her murder.
