When Nicole became engaged to Adam on New Year's Day 1973, Jake vowed to keep the two apart. His used knowledge of a parole violation to blackmail Johnny Dallas into sabotaging Adam's wedding, first by claiming that Johnny's punch was an assault by mentally unbalanced Adam. When that failed to yield the desired results, Jake coerced Johnny into shooting him - a flesh wound to the arm in order to frame Adam for attempted murder.
