EXIT: Character ceased appearing following the resolution of the Beau Richardson murder.
FRIENDS: Tracy Micelli.
OCCUPATION: Teenage hooker with a proverbial heart of gold.
Hot on the heels of a long-awaited reconciliation between stalwart couple Mike and Nancy Karr, Inez Johnson stepped forward and offered a voluntary statement to Bill Marceau. The night of Beau's murder, she had been in The Ace of Clubs, where she witnessed Mike fire three shots into the late Mr. Richardson. Although Bill doubted her veracity, the grand jury indicted Mike for the crime, based on Inez's account. His arrest took a severe toll on daughter's Laurie's emotional stability. Certain her father was innocent, she swiped Timmy Faraday's cap pistol and went to confront a terrified Inez at the home of her madam, Mrs. Yost.
In June, Inez was befriended by Tracy Micelli, who moved into the Yost house during her estrangement from husband Danny. Inez and Tracy became good friends; however, Tracy had an ulterior motive. She was secretly working with Bill Marceau to gather information that would disprove Inez's claim against Mike. When Tracy's undercover police work was later exposed, Inez remained friendly with her, eventually admitting that she had been paid $500 by Anthony Saxon to give her statement to the police. Positive that the new information would clear Mike, defense attorney Draper Scott quickly arranged a lie-detector test, but the plan backfired. Inez passed the exam. While it was true that she came forward at Saxon's urging, and did fear him, Inez truly believed that Mike was the man she saw standing over Beau's body.
This development ultimately dealt another blow to the Karr family. Fearing that Mike's only chance of acquittal had been dashed sent Laurie into another emotional tailspin. She handed her infant son over to Tracy and Danny, an act that so repulsed Johnny Dallas that he packed and left Monticello. Shortly thereafter, a chance remark by Timmy about his Uncle Ray's strong resemblance to Mike sent the Richardson case in a new direction. The police arranged a line-up, and this time, viewing the men from behind (her vantage point the night of the murder), Inez identified Harper instead of Mike. Harper admitted that he was at the murder scene, but he found Beau after seeing a woman fire the gun. The woman was believed to be Laurie Karr, who held a deep grudge against Richardson.
Suddenly, in mid-trial and following Inez's reluctant testimony against him, Mike decided to take a plea deal -involuntary manslaughter. The Richardson case appeared to be closed. However, Laurie's condition continued to disintegrate, despite Mike's suspended sentence from Judge Mendelson. She confessed to Bill and Draper that she had gone to The Ace of Clubs the night of April 1st and fired a shot into Beau, leaving him apparently dead on the floor. Laurie decided to check herself in Silver Hills for psychiatric treatment. However, police detective Steve Guthrie, recalling the details of the crime scene, realized that Beau had been shot three times, and his body found slumped over in a chair. Therefore, Beau had been alive when she left the club, and afterward, another assailant, the man spotted by Inez, had killed him. At last, Inez proved a savior to the Karr family when she corroborated Laurie's details about the firing of the shots and the position of the body.
