The middle child of the Pollock children, Elaine "Cookie" Pollock often found herself in the middle of drama and intrigue, as well, generally the result of a love affair gone wrong. Cookie fell in love with the much older, hard-drinking Malcolm Thomas, a man who had once been engaged to her sister Nancy. While kindling a romance with Cookie, Malcolm two-timed her with drama queen Eve Morris, a dilettante of the theatrical arts. Cookie secretly eloped with Malcolm, and in order to keep his side-affair with Eve going, he convinced Cookie that they should keep their marriage secret. Eventually Eve discovered the truth, and enraged, she stabbed Malcolm in the back with Cookie's scissors. Cookie was arrested and tried for the crime, managing to escape prison only when Mike Karr tricked Eve into testifying against her rival and consequently falling into a legal trap.
After Malcolm's death, Cookie was pursued by Ken Emerson, who worked for her father Joe at the newspaper. However, Cookie had eyes for suave bachelor Adam Drake, a counterespionage agent and attorney who arrived in Monticello in 1967 to help with an espionage caper at the Monticello Electric Company. As part of a plan to capture spies, Adam and Nancy pretended to have an attraction for one another. Unfortunately for Cookie, Adam actually did fall for Nancy, leading to another disappointment.
In 1968, Cookie met handsome public relations executive Ron Christopher, an employee of state senator Ben Travis. Ron and Cookie fell in love and planned to marry, but once again, crime got in the way. Ron discovered that Ben Travis was the head of a powerful loan-sharking ring. The discovery nearly cost him his life and delayed his engagement to Cookie. Following Travis' arrest, the Christophers settled down to a quiet life, until Stephanie Martin came to town. and attempted to get as close as she could to those she considered involved in Travis' loan-sharking ring, which had killed her husband and daughter. Cookie developed a pathological fear that Ron and Stephanie were involved and turned away from her husband. Although Ron was not having an affair with Stephanie, his loneliness resulted in an affair with Tiffany Whitney. When Cookie discovered the truth, she lost her mind and had to be committed to Greenhaven Sanitarium. During her rehabilitation, she impulsively divorced Ron.
In late 1971, Cookie left Greenhaven to stay with Chief of Police Bill Marceau and his wife Martha. Strange events in the Marceaus' new home convinced Cookie that the house was haunted by the ghost of her ancestor Alexandra Pollock. Her behavior became more aggressive and erratic as she fell into trances and fits of hysteria. However, it was later revealed that a secret room in the basement was the hiding place of Frank Sloane, a criminal who had been presumed dead a few years earlier in a shootout on the docks of Monticello. In addition to faking his death, Sloane had hidden a stash of heroin in the Marceau home and attempted to drive them out by staging a haunting.
When the Sloane caper was resolved, Cookie continued psychiatric treatment with Dr. Jim Fields. She made great strides and managed to forgive Ron and Tiffany for their brief affair. Cookie and Ron reconciled and remarried one another in a intimate ceremony in Nancy's home. Cookie left Monticello with Ron in September 1972, moving to New York City where he had been offered a lucrative job with a PR firm.
