Claude Revenant first appeared in a hypnosis induced flashback of Nicole Drake, who was trying to remember 45 days missing from her memory following the explosion of The Sprite in May 1974. Nicole recalled that she had been rescued from the sea and taken to Limbo Island, a Caribbean hideout of the mysterious Mr. Revenant. Nicole eventually recalled that Revenant had lied to her about Adam's death in The Sprite explosion, a ploy designed to prevent her from attempting to leave his island. Ultimately, she did escape with the aide of Revenant's manservant Billy, but not before seeing a wall map with a bright red light marking the location of Revenant's final home, a Caribbean hideaway he called "Paradise."
It later transpired that Revenant was an alias, meaning "ghost." His real name was Gilbert Darcy. He had been a mob doctor, fixing the books, but six years earlier had embezzled 30 million dollars then faked his own death. Revenant was on the run from the police, the mob, and Anthony Saxon, from whom he had embezzled the largest portion of money. Fearing that Nicole could identify the location of Paradise Island, Revenant sent a collection of assassins to eliminate Nicole before her memory could return. After numerous attempts on her life, also leading to the deaths of Tiffany, Quentin, and Phoebe, a final assassin was dispatched by Revenant to kill her on New Year's Eve 1976. This time, Adam and the police set a trap by announcing that the hit had been successful. They managed to capture the hit man and his contact. Finally assured that Nicole could not remember the location of Paradise Island, Revenant sent word that he would cease all murder attempts on her life.
However, Lt. Chandler managed to track down Billy in his native St. Anthony. Billy knew the latitude and longitude of Revenant's island. The police arranged a raid, but Revenant, tipped off by an informant, escaped. In March 1977, he returned to Monticello under the alias Edward Dantes. He went to the Drake home, knowing that Nicole would be alone because his informant was Abby Walcott, Nicole's trusted friend and neighbor, who had secretly been on his payroll. Believing that he had killed Abby by smothering her with a pillow, Revenant confronted Nicole, vowing that he would take her life as she took his. As he was about to shoot her, she announced that he would be taking two lives -she was pregnant. As Adam and the police arrived, Revenant willingly laid down his gun and was taken into custody.
