LAST APPEARANCE: 1967
PERFORMER: Nancy Pinkerton (1963-67).
EXIT: Left Monticello with husband.
MAIDEN NAME: Beth Moon
SPOUSES: John Paul Anderson (divorced). John Barnes (married 1966).
RELATIONSHIPS: Lee Pollock (fiance).
LEGAL HISTORY: Arrested and tried for the attempted murder of Vera Simms (1963).
Beth Moon was cute as a button. Everyone liked her. Her Southern charm captivated everyone. She made friends with strangers. Beth had a cute little saying for everything that she attributed to her homey relatives. She was a born optimist who believed in the innate goodness of other people. She did housekeeping for the Capices and their mentor Professor Albert Simms and his wife Vera. Beth would leave Orchard Hill with a cap adjusted on her level head and her umbrella. She carried it everywhere, claiming that there was nothing wrong with being an optimist, but she wanted to be a dry one.
Vera Simms did not trust Beth, but Vera Simms was an embittered woman wracked with constant pain. One evening, dark clouds unloaded rain and lightning. Vera heard a sound in the library and went to investigate. She entered the darkened study, and someone hit her over the head. Mrs. Simms fought for her life for days, and was relegated to a wheelchair. She was convinced that Beth had bludgeoned her and stole money and jewels. In the shadow of the garden at Orchard Hill, kept an assignation with a handsome young man she called John Paul. They embraced. When they parted, John Paul watched her back as she entered the mansion. Was he grinning or sneering?
Beth was arrested for assault when some of Mrs. Simms jewels were found in her handbag. The assault weapon was thought to be Beth's umbrella. Beth was taken to jail, but as she was being booked, a careless guard left her unattended. She saw an opportunity to go out the open door, and she went through it to her freedom. She went to Professor Albert Simms, a man she trusted, to plead for his help. But, he secretly phoned the police, and they re-arrested her.
Assistant DA Bigelow was anxious to prosecute her. He didn't buy her chirpy Southern charm. He thought she was one smart cookie. Two revelations came to pass. John Paul Anderson visited her in jail and urged her to keep their marriage a secret, because he feared if he boss, Professor Catalano, knew of his marriage, he wouldn't allow John Paul to attend any more architectural digs. What John Paul didn't tell Beth was that he was dating Professor Catalano's daughter Linda to advance his career. He had to keep his marriage to Beth a secret.
The second revelation was Albert Simms' affair with his secretary Mrs. Jaffe. He had given her most of the stolen jewels to prove his love. Vera was not supposed to have survived the assault that he had made on her with Beth's heavy umbrella, which he had stolen from her. As Beth went to trial, Albert promised his lover that they would be together.
Beth had an ineffectual lawyer. Mike Karr took over the case, and with Phil and Oakley's help, he learned about Beth's secret marriage. At first Mike suspected that John Paul had been involved in the robbery, but John Paul's crimes were ones of ambition and too many romantic liaisons, not assault and robbery. Mike had always suspected Albert Simms because he had secretly turned Beth in to the police when she begged him for help. Mike set a trap for Albert Simms. He let it drop that he had evidence in his office that would clear Beth, then he set up as secret camera and caught Simms sneaking in to steal the evidence. Showing the film in open court the next day, Simms confessed to the crime.
Freed, Beth fell in love with Lee Pollock, and they planned to be married when tragedy suddenly struck. Killer Emory Warren attempted to kill Mike Karr by crushing him under a heavy warehouse crate. Lee was felled by the falling crate, leaving him paralyzed. Unable to burden Beth with his injuries, he pushed her away. Later, Lee recovered and reconciled with Beth, but while he was away at college to study architecture, Beth became infatuated with Mike Karr's junior attorney John Barnes, who was defending young socialite Geraldine McGrath against a murder charge. Ultimately, Beth decided to leave Lee for John, and they married. The marriage proved to be tempestuous one and nearly ended in divorce. However, John was severely beaten by spies attempting to retrieve a microdot that Beth carried in an antique clock, bought while trying to obtain a Mexican divorce. When John recovered, he and Beth left for a new life far away from Monticello.
